Em 2022 a face da Terra está bem modificada. Em Nova York há 40 milhões de habitantes e o efeito estufa aumentou muito a temperatura, fazendo o calor ficar quase insuportável. Somente os ricos e poderosos têm acesso a comidas raras, como carnes, frutas e legumes. Quando um empresário das indústrias Soylent é assassinado em seu luxuoso apartamento, o detetive Robert Thorn é designado para investigar o caso.
