Quando Silvia Broome, intérprete linguística da ONU, ouve acidentalmente uma conversa numa língua africana que compreende, convence-se de que está em preparação um atentado contra um presidente africano que vai discursar na Assembleia Geral da ONU em poucos dias, a fim de se defender das acusações de genocídio contra ele. Todavia, o agente dos Serviços Secretos dos EUA destacado para o caso começa a desconfiar de que Silvia não é tão neutra e inocente quanto pode aparentar, e de que também ela poderia querer ver aquele presidente morto.
